The purpose of the following list of references is not to imply that christians are justified by law or obliged to follow its every precept. The Holy Spirit is the one who produces in us the fruit of righteousness. However he is also the one who convicts us of sin. Those sins are not defined in an arbitrary and subjective manner. They are forms of behaviour which are contrary to the character of God, and Godís character does not change. Although the Holy Spirit does speak to us individually according to our circumstances and spiritual maturity, there remains a common reference point that tells us what sin is. That reference point is the set of ethical principles revealed in Godís Word, both in the old testament and the new testament. I believe there is no conflict in fundamental ethics between the old and new covenants, but rather continuity. In fact, every one of the ten commandments is confirmed by the teaching of Jesus and his apostles. To illustrate this I have collected scriptures for each commandment. From Matthew to Revelation the new testament is overflowing with such references, so the list is far from exhaustive. I have included sufficient references to show that Jesus did not come ďto abolish the law or the prophetsĒ (Matthew 5:17). Jesusí reference here to the prophets is interesting, because it was they who spoke from Godís heart about the spirit of the law, just as Jesus does.
